The Great Wall of China was first built during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods (7th century BCE). The Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE) first connected the scattered walls into a unified structure. Most existing sections were constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), spanning approximately 13,000 kilometers. Originally a military structure to defend against nomadic peoples, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1987.
