Beijing Aquarium

Beijing Aquarium

Nestled within Beijing Zoo in Xicheng District, the Beijing Aquarium is one of Asia’s largest indoor aquariums, spanning 120,000 square meters. Opened in 1999, it houses over 1,000 species of marine and freshwater life, including rare sharks, beluga whales, and tropical fish. Designed as an educational hub, it combines immersive exhibits with conservation initiatives, offering visitors a window into the world’s oceans, rivers, and coral reefs. Its iconic 60-meter-long underwater tunnel and daily animal shows make it a top destination for families and marine enthusiasts.

Historical Overview

Founded in 1999 as part of Beijing’s urban ecological development plan, the aquarium expanded in 2008 to include a dedicated “Ocean Theater” for dolphin and sea lion performances. In 2016, it launched the “Coral Reef Conservation Center” to breed endangered species, earning recognition from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Today, it collaborates with global marine institutes to protect species like the green sea turtle and giant grouper.

Structural Layout

The aquarium follows a thematic zoning system:

  • Rainforest Wonderland: Simulates Amazonian habitats with piranhas, anacondas, and tropical birds.
  • Coral Reef Adventure: Features vibrant clownfish, stingrays, and a 360° coral reef display.
  • Ocean Theater: A 1,800-seat arena for dolphin, beluga whale, and sea lion performances.
  • Polar World: Home to penguins, Arctic foxes, and seals in chilled environments.
  • China’s Seas Zone: Showcases endangered Yangtze River sturgeon and South China Sea species.

Key facilities include the “Marine Science Classroom” and a 4D cinema.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
