Muzhaling Ridge

Historical Overview
Muzhaling’s history dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), when it was established as a Taoist sanctuary. Monks and hermits sought solitude in its caves and peaks, leaving behind inscriptions and temples that endure today. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the area became a royal hunting ground, with emperors drawn to its lush forests and abundant wildlife. In the 20th century, it transitioned into a protected nature reserve, and in 2005, it gained national recognition as a geopark. Key milestones include its 2007 designation as a AAAAA-level scenic spot and its 2012 inclusion in UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network, cementing its status as a conservation and cultural treasure.

Structural Layout
The scenic area is divided into three main zones:

1. Peak Area: Dominated by the 2,156-meter-high Guanyin Peak, the highest in the Funiu Mountains, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.
2. Waterfall Corridor: Home to over 20 waterfalls, including the 180-meter-tall Bailong Waterfall, China’s tallest single-drop waterfall, and the serene Xianren Waterfall, surrounded by moss-covered rocks.
3. Forest Reserve: A 60-square-kilometer expanse of ancient bamboo forests, red pine groves, and alpine meadows, intersected by hiking trails and wooden boardwalks.
   Key infrastructure includes the Muzhaling Ecological Museum, which showcases the region’s geology and biodiversity, and the Skywalk Bridge, a 200-meter-long glass pathway suspended 1,000 meters above ground.
