Liangjiang Sihu (Two Rivers and Four Lakes) is a scenic water network in central Guilin, China, integrating the Li River, Peach Blossom River, and four interconnected lakes—Rong, Shan, Gui, and Mulong. This urban landscape, illuminated by nightly light shows, offers a tranquil blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore via sightseeing cruises, walking paths, or bridges, encountering iconic landmarks like the Sun and Moon Pagodas, ancient stone bridges, and lush gardens. A UNESCO-recognized project, Liangjiang Sihu highlights Guilin’s harmonious coexistence of urban development and ecological preservation, making it a must-see destination for nature lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.

Introduction & Historical Significance
Nestled in the heart of Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Two Rivers and Four Lakes (Liangjiang Sìhú) is a UNESCO-recognized urban water system blending natural karst landscapes with human ingenuity. Comprising the Li River (Lijiang), Peach Blossom River (Taohua Jiang), and four interconnected lakes—Rong Lake (Rónghú),杉 Lake (Shānhú), Guì Lake (Guìhú), and Wood Dragon Lake (Mùlónghú)—this 14.5km water network was first engineered during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) and restored in the 1990s. It embodies Guilin’s motto “Guilin’s landscape is the best under heaven,” harmonizing Han-Zhuang architecture, Confucian gardens, and Buddhist temples with the Li River’s emerald waters.

Architectural Layout & Design
The system integrates ancient canals, modern bridges, and ecological restoration:

  • Water Network: A interconnected web of rivers and lakes linked by 19 bridges (e.g., the 1400-year-old Xīnghuā Bridge and the glass-bottomed Riyue Shuangtá Pavilion Bridge), forming a continuous 14.5km waterway loop.
  • Cultural Landmarks: The 900-year-old Dūxiù Pea k (a Confucian tower), the 1,200-year-old Qíngqī Temple, and the 18th-century Lingqu Canal sluice gates.
  • Eco-Design: Solar-powered lighting, permeable pavements, and wetland restoration projects (e.g., the 2020 Guì Lake Reed Bed Renewal) align with sustainable tourism principles.
  • Nightscape Magic: LED-lit bridges, floating lantern displays, and moonlit reflections create a "Venice of the East" ambiance.

Major Attractions & Experiences

  • Boat Tours: Cruise through illuminated caves, past ancient pagodas, and under arched stone bridges while learning about local legends.
  • Historic Sites: Explore the 1,300-year-old Rónghú Pavilion, the 800-year-old Dūxīu Tower, and the 16th-century East-West Alley (Dōngxī Xiàng).
  • Cultural Performances: Evening "Li River Folk Song" shows, traditional fisherman’s cormorant fishing demonstrations, and calligraphy workshops.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
