Hulishan Fortress

Hulishan Fortress

Hulishan Fortress, perched on Xiamen’s southern coast, is a 19th-century military marvel that once guarded China’s seas against foreign invaders. Built in 1891 during the Qing Dynasty, this coastal bastion houses the world’s largest surviving 19th-century coastal cannon—a 280mm Krupp gun. Now a museum and UNESCO-recognized heritage site, it blends military history with panoramic ocean vistas, offering cannon demonstrations, underground tunnels, and a fascinating glimpse into China’s late imperial defenses.

Historical Overview

Construction began in 1891 under Emperor Guangxu, part of China’s desperate “Self-Strengthening Movement” to modernize its navy. The fortress withstood the 1900 Boxer Rebellion and saw action in the 1937–1938 Battle of Xiamen against Japanese forces. Post-1949, it served as a PLA naval base before opening to the public in 1984. Key milestones include the 2000 discovery of its Krupp cannon’s blueprint in a German archive and its 2017 listing as a “National Defense Education Base.”

Structural Layout

The fortress spans 7.6 hectares, divided into:

1. Upper Battery: The iconic Krupp cannon emplacement with 360-degree ocean views.

2. Lower Battery: Ammunition depots, soldier barracks, and a restored 1920s command post.

3. Underground Maze: A 500m network of tunnels linking gunpowder magazines and living quarters.

4. Coastal Walls: 1.5km of granite fortifications with 12 embrasures for artillery.

Key structures include the Martyr’s Memorial, the Military Museum, and the “Eye of Xiamen” lookout point.

Major Attractions

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
