Impression of Liu Sanjie (performance)

Impression Sanjie Liu is a groundbreaking outdoor spectacle directed by renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou, set against the breathtaking natural backdrop of the Li River near Yangshuo, Guilin, China. Inspired by the legendary folk tale of Sanjie Liu, the performance features over 600 local performers and integrates cutting-edge lighting, sound, and stage design to create a mesmerizing fusion of art, culture, and nature. Through vibrant dance, music, and traditional ethnic costumes, the show vividly portrays the region’s rich folklore, rural life, and karst landscapes. As one of China’s most iconic "Impression" series productions, it offers audiences an unforgettable evening of cultural immersion and visual grandeur under the stars.

Introduction & Historical Significance
Nestled along the Li River in Yangshuo, GuilinImpression Liu Sanjie is the world’s first large-scale mountain-water real-scene performance, directed by Zhang Yimou, Wang Chaoge, and Fan Yue. Premiering in 2004, it transforms the Li River and 12 mist-shrouded karst peaks into a natural stage, blending Guangxi’s Ethnic Minority cultures—Zhuang, Miao, and Yao—with the region’s breathtaking landscapes. Rooted in the legend of Liu Sanjie, the “Song Fairy” of Guangxi, the production reinterprets her story through immersive visuals, music, and dance, earning acclaim as a UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage showcase. It pioneered the integration of natural landscapes with performing arts, catalyzing sustainable tourism in Yangshuo and elevating Guilin’s global cultural profile.

Architectural Layout & Design
The performance harmonizes with nature through eco-conscious design:

  • Natural Stage: The Li River and karst mountains form a dynamic backdrop, with a 1.7 km² “theater” where water, mist, and light create ever-changing scenes.
  • Bamboo Integration: Locally sourced bamboo constructs viewing platforms, lantern corridors, and shaded pathways, merging seamlessly with surrounding bamboo forests.
  • Audience Seating: Tiered seating accommodates 3,000+ spectators, with options from backless stools (C-level) to VIP covered seats (A-level), ensuring unobstructed views of the stage.
  • Sustainable Infrastructure: Solar-powered lighting, permeable pathways, and rainwater systems minimize environmental impact, while pre-show cultural installations like “Bamboo Lantern Unbroken” enhance the immersive experience.

Major Attractions & Highlights

  • Seven Scenes: The 70-minute performance unfolds across seven acts, featuring traditional folk songs, ritual dances, and symbolic narratives—such as the “Fisherman’s Song” and “Moonlight Love.”
  • Light & Sound Spectacle: Laser projections, fire effects, and synchronized music create a sensory feast, while the “Moon Hill” arch frames celestial moments.
  • Cultural Workshops: Pre-show activities include Bamboo weaving, batik dyeing, and minority dance lessons, offering hands-on cultural engagement.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
