Xingping Ancient Town

Xingping Ancient Town

Xingping Ancient Town, nestled along the Li River in Yangshuo County, Guilin, is a timeless riverside settlement renowned for its well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, serene karst landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. Dating back over 1,700 years, the town features cobblestone streets, ancient temples, and traditional dwellings, offering a glimpse into China’s rural past. As a focal point of the "Ten-Mile Gallery" and the starting point for the Li River’s most scenic cruise section, Xingping attracts photographers and travelers with iconic vistas like Xiangbi Hill and the 20-Yuan RMB banknote backdrop. Its tranquil ambiance, local crafts, and riverside charm make it a must-visit destination for cultural exploration in southern China.

Introduction & Historical Significance
Nestled in Yangshuo County, Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Xingping Ancient Town is a 1,700-year-old cultural treasure and UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Site (part of South China Karst). Established during the Three Kingdoms period (265 CE) as Shang’an County seat, it evolved through dynasties: renamed Xiping in the Jin Dynasty (265–274 CE) and later Xingping after administrative shifts. As the birthplace of the iconic 20 RMB banknote landscape (Yuanbao Mountain in Dahebei Village), it embodies the harmony of human history and natural grandeur.

Architectural Layout & Design
The 313.77km² town harmonizes Ming-Qing architecture with karst landscapes:

  • Ancient Street: A 1,000-meter-long cobblestone street lined with timber-framed shops, provincial guild halls, and traditional courtyards, stretching from southeast to Rongshutan Dock.
  • Cultural Landmarks: Ming-era Tengjiao Temple, Qing-style stone bridges, and the 1,500-year-old Banyan Tree Plaza. The 20 RMB observation deck offers panoramic views of karst peaks and the Li River.
  • Eco-Design: Zero-carbon initiatives (e.g., Dahebei Village’s 2024 "zero-carbon village" designation) and solar-powered lighting align with sustainable tourism.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
