The Name of the Castle–From Western Han Pass to Ancient Eastern Castle
The name"Taoping"originates from its long history and geographical features.According to historical records,the village was first built in 111 BC during the Western Han Dynasty,when Guangrou County was established here.Taoping existed as a county-administered pass and a key defensive area.For over two thousand years,it has witnessed the vicissitudes of the Qiang people,from the Qiang tribes of the Han Dynasty to the Tubo conflicts of the Tang Dynasty,this fortress has always stood.In the Qiang language,it's called"Qizi,"meaning a land nestled against mountains and beside water,fertile and abundant.Due to its unique architecture and defense system,it has been hailed by scholars both at home and abroad as a"mysterious ancient castle of the East."

The Road to Rebirth—From Ancient Village Preservation to a World-Class Icon
The modern story of Taoping Qiang Village is a model of preservation,inheritance,and revitalization:
Preserving Ancient Charm(Before the 1990s):As a purely Qiang ethnic settlement,it preserved its most primitive architectural style and customs.

Awakening and Exploration(From the mid-1990s onwards):Villagers,represented by Long Xiaoqiong,were the first to invite tourists into the village,initiating the history of folk tourism development.90%of the villagers began to engage in tourism-related industries.

Rebirth and New Landscape(After 2008):After the devastating Wenchuan earthquake of May 12th,relying on post-disaster reconstruction,a new village covering more than 120 acres was built two to three hundred meters from the old village,forming a new pattern of cultural tourism development:"preservation of the old village and development of the new village."

Amazing the World(2024):With its well-preserved ancient architectural complex and profound ethnic culture,Taoping Qiang Village stood out from numerous villages worldwide,being selected as a"Best Village for Tourism"by the United Nations Tourism Organization,transforming from an"Oriental Castle"to a"World Castle."

Must-See Wonders:A Symphony of Nature and Culture

Nature's Creation—A Generous Gift from the High Mountains
The natural landscape of Taoping Qiang Village is a harmony of high mountains and deep valleys with human wisdom.

The Spirit of Mountains and Rivers:The Magnificence of the Plateau Valley
Geographical Features:Taoping Qiang Village is located deep within the folds of the Zagu River Valley,belonging to a mountainous,three-dimensional climate zone.At an altitude of approximately 1500 meters,the village is a perfect transition zone between the plateau and the valley,free from altitude sickness while allowing residents to fully enjoy the vastness and coolness of the plateau.Standing in the village,one can see majestic snow-capped mountains in the distance and the rushing Zagu River nearby.

Four Seasons:This is a natural"oxygen bar"for urban dwellers seeking respite from the elements,boasting an extremely high forest and grassland coverage.In spring and summer,lush greenery abounds,with sweet cherries and crisp plums hanging heavy on the branches;in autumn,colorful forests and tawny stone houses create a picturesque scene;in winter,the snow-covered ancient castle exudes tranquility and mystery.

Hidden Fruits:The Warmth of the Land
The fertile alluvial fan soil within the canyon nurtures renowned agricultural specialties from Sichuan and Chongqing.If you happen to visit during cherry(May-June)or crisp plum(August-October)season,consider visiting the orchards and picking these sun-kissed fruits from the plateau yourself.

Humanistic Ingenuity—Civilization Hanging on the Cliffs
The architecture here is not merely dwelling,but a perfect fusion of military,lifestyle,and art.

Millennium-Old Watchtowers(Soul of the Ancient Castle):The soul landmark of Taoping Qiang Village.Several ancient watchtowers,reaching tens of meters in height,still stand within the village.The most famous are Watchtowers No.1 and No.2,both nine stories high.They served either as battle towers for defense and alarm purposes,or as official towers symbolizing power.Constructed of stone slabs without plumb lines or blueprints,they have withstood a thousand years of earthquakes and wars,a miracle in the history of Qiang architecture.

Maze Network(Oriental Ancient Castle):Centered around the ancient castle,the old village features eight radial entrances,crisscrossed by thirteen passageways forming a complex network.The passageways vary in width and height,with hidden stone gates on both sides.Villagers can move freely,while outsiders find themselves in a maze—a masterpiece of ancient military defense.Photography Tip:Wander through the passageways and capture the moment when light and shadow filter through the observation holes onto the stone slabs—a truly cinematic experience.

Underground Water Network(Natural Air Conditioning):This is the ultimate expression of the wisdom of the ancient Qiang people.Spring water,drawn from the high mountains,flows through a series of carved stone channels to every household.This not only solved the drinking water problem but also regulated indoor temperature,served as a fire-fighting facility,and even became a secret escape route during wartime,earning it the nickname"natural air conditioner."

Yang Family Courtyard(Architectural Highlight):As the ancestral home of the descendants of the Qiang King,this is the core courtyard that must be seen in the village.It perfectly embodies the architectural feature of"combining watchtowers and traditional towers,"with crisscrossing beams and pillars,and dozens of doors concealing secret passages leading to watchtowers and defensive mechanisms,showcasing the lifestyle and military wisdom of a wealthy Qiang family.

New Village and Intangible Cultural Heritage Center:Unlike the rustic charm of the old village,the new village serves as accommodation,dining,and commercial space.The Qiang embroidery intangible cultural heritage learning center here displays exquisite traditional clothing and cultural and creative products,allowing visitors to witness the art of needlework firsthand.

Photography Tips:
Climb to the top of the watchtower or a high platform for panoramic views of the ancient castle and the magnificent snow-capped mountains in the distance;
The second floor of the cafes or cultural and creative shops in the new village offers excellent spots for capturing silhouettes of the watchtowers in the old village;
At dusk,the setting sun casts its golden rays upon the brown stone walls,creating the richest interplay of light and shadow.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
