The Name "Hongya" – From Ancient Battlefield to Bustling Dock
The name "Hongya" originates from its precipitous terrain—the site of Hongyadong was originally a cliff by the river with a cave beneath, anciently called "Hongya Cave." As early as the Warring States period, this was an important military fortress of the Ba State. In the fourth year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1371 AD), when Dai Ding built the city walls of Chongqing, Hongyamen was designated as a closed gate among Chongqing's seventeen gates (nine open, eight closed). Although it did not function as a passage gate, it remained a strategic military site. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, with the flourishing of Chongqing's commerce, Hongyadong gradually developed into an important dock and goods distribution center. Stilted buildings were constructed along the cliffs, merchants gathered, and it became the most vibrant and bustling area of Chongqing.
The Path of Rebirth – From Dilapidated Shantytown to City Landmark
The modern story of Hongyadong is an epic of magnificent transformation from a run-down shantytown to a world-famous internet celebrity attraction:
Historical Decline (Late 20th Century): With urban development, the old stilted buildings in the Hongyadong area fell into disrepair, becoming a crowded and dilapidated shantytown, out of step with Chongqing's rapidly changing cityscape.
Awakening and Reshaping (2002-2006): In 2002, the Hongyadong Traditional Folk Custom Area project was officially launched. Based on the prototype of "stilted buildings on the cliffs," it restored the traditional Bayu architectural style while integrating modern commercial functions, with a total investment of 385 million yuan.
Stunning Debut (2006-Present): Completed and opened in 2006, it quickly became popular due to its unique architectural form and dazzling night scenery. Today, it is a National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction and a landmark of Chongqing, receiving over ten million visitors annually and being hailed as the "real-life Spirited Away."
